Johnny Oakley

Attended: Young Political Leader Summer Experience.

Now: Studies Politics & International Relations at UCL.

"I took part in the InvestIN Young Political Leader Programme in 2019 and the experience has proved to be invaluable. Nearly three years on from the experience and I still look back on it with fondness.

After achieving an A* in A-level Politics, my interest in international affairs led me to take a gap year and explore other countries and cultures - namely Spain, Poland, Morocco, and Canada. Returning home, I began my undergraduate studies at University College London and I am now nearing the end of my first year BSc Politics and International Relations course. Despite my keen interest in international relations, domestic politics is where my passion lies and InvestIN helped spark that passion. During the InvestIN programme, I was lucky enough to be voted Speaker of the House by my fellow participants and I got the once in a lifetime experience of presiding over the House during a mock Minister’s Questions and chairing a debate between the former MP for Poplar and Limehouse Jim Fitzpatrick and freelance communications consultant Paul Richards. To chair a debate between two senior figures in politics was incredible and the knowledge gained from those great thinkers and speakers will stick with me throughout my life.

InvestIN gives those who participate the confidence and knowledge to allow them to succeed in their chosen field and for me it took away a lot of anxieties about how to enter the world of politics. I would highly recommend all of InvestIN’s courses, as the professional exposure is something you would struggle to find elsewhere. Coupling the enjoyment I had with the knowledge I gained and the weekend has proven to be highly beneficial."

The Alumni Project

We often get asked what our students do beyond InvestIN - whether they continue to pursue the same career, or pivot into a different field. In 2023 we conducted a survey of our alumni students to find out what they are doing now and whether InvestIN helped them in this journey.

80% of respondents said that our programmes helped them decide what career to pursue

78% of respondents referenced InvestIN in their university application

3/4 of respondents that referenced InvestIN received a place at their first choice university

2/3 of respondents said our programmes gave them the knowledge and skills they needed to succeed in their chosen career
