What work experience is beneficial for becoming a psychologist?
The type of experience you'll need to acquire will depend on what type of psychologist you want to become. For instance, working as an assistant psychologist or research assistant psychologist will be beneficial if you're looking to work in a clinical setting. If you're more interested in working as an occupational psychologist, look for experience working in a professional environment, such as supporting a HR department in a company.
What are the different areas of psychology you can get work experience in?
When looking for work experience opportunities, consider which area you'd like to build skills. These include: - Educational psychology: Understanding the psychological aspects of learning and development within an educational setting - Clinical psychology: Understand mental health assessment, intervention, therapy, and more within a clinical setting - Occupational psychology: Learn about the psychology of workplaces, including employee behaviour, within a professional setting - Health psychology: Understand how psychology and health intersect within a healthcare setting - Forensic psychology: Apply psychological knowledge within the criminal justice system
How do you get experience as a psychology student?
Placements, internships, and volunteering opportunities are the best way to get experience as a psychology student. Many employers recruit directly from internships, while others will generally expect some kind of experience in the field. Ways to gain experience that you should look out for include: - Working as an assistant psychologist, therapy assistant, or assistant practitioner - Working within the prison service (either a role or trainee placement) - Mental health support roles - Working in rehabilitation centres - Volunteer positions at mental health charities and residential programmes - Working as a special educational needs (SEN) teaching assistant - Research assistant roles (paid or voluntary) - Shadowing a psychologist
What qualifications do you need to be a psychologist?
Becoming a psychologist requires: - A psychology degree accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) - A psychology conversion course - A Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership - An accredited postgraduate qualification in your chosen psychological specialism Psychology conversion courses are required if: - Your psychology degree isn't accredited by BPS - Your degree is in a subject other than psychology To apply for a postgraduate degree in your chosen specialism, you'll need: - At least a 2:1 in your degree - Strong research skills - Relevant work experience Be sure to check the entry requirements for each institution you plan to apply to, as these will vary.
What skills do you need to be a good psychologist?
Good psychologists have the following skills: - Communication skills: When trying to understand human behaviour, communication skills are vital, including listening skills - Interpersonal skills: Working with patients requires good interpersonal skills, such as empathy and compassion - Patience: You'll need patience to get to understand your patients, particularly when their behaviour deviates from our preconceived ideas of what's "normal" - Strong ethics: Patients’ care is paramount, so being honest with patients, treating them equally, and other ethical considerations are essential - Curiosity and drive to learn: Staying on top of the latest developments and research in the field will help you do your job well - Emotional stability: Your role will likely take you into emotionally challenging circumstances, so you'll need to be able to deal with these professionally - Problem-solving skills: Problems and challenges will arise regularly, so a creative approach to problem-solving will help you serve your patients
