What work experience is beneficial for vet school?
Most vet schools will expect you to have at least two to four weeks of experience with both small and large animals, in addition to observational experience within a veterinary practice. However, each school's requirements may differ, so be sure to check with each institution you plan to apply to.
How do I find vet work experience?
When looking for vet work experience, there are a range of avenues you can explore, including: - Local veterinary practices and clinics: They may be able to offer you hands-on experience and mentorship opportunities - Animal shelters and rescue centres: Supporting animal welfare at shelters and rescue centres will expose you to different animal species - ideal for gaining skills and improving your application - Wildlife medicine: To learn more about wildlife medicine, reach out to wildlife rehabilitation centres - Large animal and farm veterinary medicine: Experience working on farms will give you a chance to learn about the healthcare needs of large animals - Abattoirs: Abattoirs must abide by certain animal welfare and food safety standards, and will give you a better understanding of veterinary medicine - Zoos: Zoos are full of exotic animals, making it the perfect environment to learn about a wide range of healthcare requirements Visit or contact as many places as you can to express your desire to build experience in the field.
How do I become a vet?
To become a vet, you'll first need to complete a veterinary degree approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Places on these courses are highly competitive, so you'll need to show that: - You can meet the academic requirements - You understand what being a vet involves - You're motivated and passionate - You have some relevant experience Full time veterinary courses take around five to six years, but if you have a degree in a related subject, you may be able to take a four-year graduate entry veterinary degree course.
What skills make a good vet?
Good vets have: - Manual dexterity: You'll be working a lot with your hands, so dexterity and precision are important - Good analytical skills: As a vet, you'll be diagnosing patients who can't communicate with you, so strong analytical skills are essential - Communication skills: You'll need to communicate clearly with pet owners. Often, conversations will be sensitive, so strong communication and general interpersonal skills will help - Desire to learn: You'll need to keep up-to-date with medical news and scientific advances to ensure you're doing the best job you can - Problem-solving skills: You'll often face issues without a clear solution, so problem-solving skills will help you navigate these - Patience: Animals and their owners will be distressed at times, so you'll need to remain patient and professional - Emotional resilience: Sometimes there'll be nothing you can do for an animal – accepting this is tough, so emotional resilience will be helpful
