The Young International Development Expert Summer Experience gives students aged 15-18 a fully-immersive experience of working in international development in London.

Over the course of 15 days, students will have some of the most exclusive experiences of development that one can imagine: represent the UN Security Council in conflict resolution at a leading UK policy department, design your own advocacy campaign for a world-renowned NGO and pitching a sustainable business model to a multinational company.

Design Your Own Summer Experience:

  • Select your preferred length of experience. You can choose to attend for:

      1.  days 1-15 (the full experience); or

      2.  days 1-10 only; or

      3.  days 1-5 only

Immersive Experiences Days 1-5

Development Aid: Inequality and Poverty Reduction

-Gain a comprehensive understanding of humanitarian development
-Acquire the skills needed to work in humanitarian aid
-Find out what constitutes a humanitarian approach and explore shifts within the field
-The development aid dilemma: short term need vs systemic conflict and inequality
-Work in teams to tackle a humanitarian project: reduce poverty and inequality in an urban area
-Consider ethical questions and balance priorities
-Present your long-term development strategy and budget proposals to the experts

Policy, Peace Building and Conflict Resolution

-Visit a leading UK policy department in the heart of Westminster
-Discover the factors that drive decisions and learn the role of diplomacy on the world stage
-Tackle a UN-style conflict scenario and work in teams to restore peace
-Explore tactics used to defuse tensions, build relationships and end suffering
-Represent the UN Security Council as you work to form a collective resolution
-Negotiate a compromise factions as you balance national and international priorities
-Resolve the conflict scenario and vote on your negotiated resolution

Sustainable Development: Science and Consulting

-Visit a pioneering scientific research institute making strides in the science of climate change
-Take the lead! Climate change has disrupted the ecosystem in an island community: work in teams to represent conflicting scientific institutes
-Pinpoint the key drivers of climate change in the affected area
-Use qualitative and quantitative evidence to guide your thought process

Emergency Relief Work: Crisis Response

-A national state of emergency is declared following a devastating natural phenomenon. Can you provide urgent relief and aid to the surrounding area?
-An emergency council is created: work in teams to create an action plan to manage the consequences
-React quickly and effectively to an evolving situation
-Set out a step-by-step guide to a sustainable future
-Present your sustainable agenda to governmental officials for adjudication

This Summer Experience is for students aged 15-18 and you do not require any prior knowledge to attend.

The programme starts on 28th July 2023. You can choose to attend for either days 1-5, days 1-10 or days 1-15; and either with or without accommodation. Pricing for all options is set out below.

The programme is based at UCL and the surrounding University of London campus. Certain days take place in other key industry locations in London.

Accommodation Location

Students who choose accommodation will reside in University of London halls of residence. We occupy 3 different halls close-by to each other (listed below). The vast majority of students will be placed in Garden Halls

As part of your booking, you will receive 12 months’ access to our state-of-the-art tech platform, AmbitionX. Here you will find all of your programme materials and complete post-programme assessments to gain coveted ‘experience points’ to demonstrate your levels of professional development. You will also be able to access any of InvestIN’s Live Online weekend and evening programmes through AmbitionX at no extra cost.



In the unlikely event that the in-person programme is completely cancelled because of Covid-19 then students will receive a refund. We have never yet had to cancel a London summer experience, having successfully delivered programmes during the summers of 2020 and 2021, with strict social distancing and excellent feedback. We shall of course adhere to all Covid-related government guidelines in place at the time of the programme and keep student safety as the highest priority.

If you pay via credit because you postponed a previous booking then the credit note will be reissued to you in full.
