Are you an aspiring engineer? Join our 2025 engineering summer school in London, designed for students aged 15-18. 

Over the course of 2 weeks, students will get to step into the shoes of an engineer working in London, through a range of immersive career simulations and exclusive professional site visits. Take apart a petrol engine, visit the largest collection of classic cars in the UK and board a Boeing 747 jet with aerospace engineers.

1.  First Week Only (taster experience); or
2.  Two-Week Experience (the full programme); or
3.  Two-Week Premium Experience (the ultimate package with both weeks plus enhanced benefits)

Accommodation
You can choose either residential or non-residential. The accommodation is at UCL student halls in central London. We provide residential students with meals, guardianship and fun activities on evenings and weekends. Airport transfers are also available at checkout.

  • You can choose to attend our programmes as a day student if you live locally. Otherwise, our residential package will give you a great flavour of life in student halls of residence before you apply to university in the future.

Immersive Experience Week 1

Civil and Structural Engineering

  • Use core concepts and real-world constraints to design a civil engineering masterpiece 
  • Build a structure to carry weight across two points in a graduate recruitment-style group task 
  • Compete against other attendees to impress the judges and become the most successful engineer 

Materials and Aerospace Engineering 

  • Understand the physics of flight when manufacturing a high-performing aerofoil 
  • Work with a Rolls Royce engineer to improve and test 3D-printed aerofoil designs 
  • Find the optimum conditions for flight using a wind tunnel 
  • Discuss your results with top material and aerospace engineers and propose solutions to achieve the most aerodynamic design 

The Boeing Experience 

  • Visit an airfield and explore a range of commercial aircraft with pilots and aerospace engineers 
  • Learn how the design of different aircraft and gliders varies depending on function 
  • Rig and derig a glass fibre glider with traditional controls, working as a team to lift the wings and secure the main rigging pins 
  • Work alongside electrical engineers and pilots to programme a fly-by-wire control panel 

Engineering in the 21st Century: Robotics and Machine Learning 

  • Discover how modern engineering has become more efficient with the invention of ground-breaking technology 
  • Investigate how innovative biomedical engineering solutions will improve medical diagnostics and enhance treatments

This Summer Experience is for students aged 15-18 and you do not require any prior knowledge to attend.

Venues:

  • The programme is based at UCL and the surrounding University of London campus. Certain days take place in other key industry locations in London.

Accommodation location:

  • Students live on university campus in central London and are allocated to halls of residence used by University of London students, including those from UCL and LSE. We typically occupy a range of halls, including Garden Halls, College Hall, International Hall and Frances Gardner House.  

    All rooms are single, en-suite.

When is the deadline for registering for an experience?
Places on our programmes are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis so we will close registration as soon as we reach capacity, because of this we would always recommend booking as soon as possible to ensure you do not miss the opportunity to attend.
Do I get a certificate?
All students are invited to complete a post-programme online assessment and upon completion, they will receive a digital, personalised certificate. Students attending 2-week programmes will also receive a physical certificate and an industry reference letter.
Who are your safeguarding team?
On each Summer Experience, we have safeguarding team members on-site 24/7 to promote the safeguarding and pastoral welfare of our students. Our team are security-vetted (enhanced DBS-checked) professionals who work in education full time and our team is made up of Academic Professionals / LSA, Safeguarding Officers, Nursing Professionals, and Mental Health Practitioners. Students will therefore always be able to easily contact a guardian, should they need any support.
Do you offer payment plans?
You can secure your place online with a non-refundable £950 deposit and pay the remainder at a later date. Please contact info@investin.org if you would like to discuss alternative payment plans.
Will there be any opportunities for rest days?
Programme hours take place Monday-Friday, with a break over the weekend. If you select the 2-Week Premium option, the weekend will feature exclusive professional development opportunities outlined in the timetable.
What kind of work experience is beneficial for aspiring engineers?
Outside the industry, roles in sales, project management, or technical roles can help you build the necessary communication, collaboration and leadership skills that will support a career in engineering. More industry-related work experience opportunities include internships and apprenticeships, mentorships programmes, summer schools and freelance work. InvestIN’s summer school programme is a fantastic work experience opportunity for students aged 15 to 18 looking to pursue a career in engineering.
Do you need work experience to become an engineer?
To become an engineer, you'll require the appropriate qualifications and work experience. Recruiters value work experience, so a relevant placement year or summer internship will impress your potential employers and set you apart from other applicants.
Is it hard to get into engineering?
Engineering is a highly distinguished industry, so positions in the field can be competitive. However, with hard work, the right qualifications and good work experience, students can land their dream engineering job.
What skills are important for a career in engineering?
Key skills that will help engineering students succeed include: - Relevant technical knowledge: Keeping up-to-date with industry news and getting certified in new technologies will help you when submitting job applications - Communication skills: All projects will involve discussions between various parties, so the ability to listen and communicate clearly is essential - Leadership skills: To lead on projects, you'll have to demonstrate your ability to take responsibility and guide your team towards completion - Creativity: When problems arise, you'll need to be able to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions - Innovation: Engineering is an industry that's constantly looking for innovative ways to improve, so innovation skills will be a huge bonus - Conscientiousness: Diligence and attention to detail are essential in such a specialised field - Tenacity and resilience: You'll face lots of challenges as an engineer, so your ability to stay focused and determined will help you succeed - Interpersonal skills: Teamwork is a vital part of engineering roles, so interpersonal skills will help you build successful working relationships
What qualifications do I need to be an engineer?
To become an engineer, you'll need to complete either a relevant degree or apprenticeship. Students completing an engineering degree will attain a Level 5 or Level 6 qualification in a chemical, civil, mechanical, general, or electronic engineering specialism. Completing an apprenticeship will give you a Level 3 qualification and lots of work experience in the field. Up to 80% of your apprenticeship will be spent working with a relevant company in the engineering sector.
