How can you become a forensic scientist?
There are three main ways you can become a forensic scientist: - A university course - Apprenticeships - Applying directly, if you have significant lab experience
What qualifications do you need to become a forensic scientist?
To become a forensic scientist, you'll need either a degree in forensic science, or a degree in a related, scientific subject. This includes medical sciences, chemistry, or biological sciences. Competition for jobs can be high, so make sure your degree is accredited by The Chartered Society of Forensic Science. To get onto an undergraduate course, you'll generally need two or three A Levels, including chemistry.
What apprenticeships can you do to become a forensic scientist?
The most relevant apprenticeships are: - Research scientist degree apprenticeship - Laboratory scientist degree apprenticeship Be sure to look for a company that provides forensic science services, or a police force that has relevant lab facilities in-house.
Do you need work experience to become a forensic scientist?
You’ll likely need prior work experience to become a forensic scientist. It’s a competitive industry to get into, and work experience is a key thing employers will look for in applications.
What work experience is good for prospective forensic scientists?
Experience working in a laboratory is ideal. As most forensic scientist laboratories don't offer work experience, you'll need to look in related areas, such as hospitals or research centres. Internships and summer schools, like InvestIN's, represent a fantastic opportunity to get laboratory experience and build professional networks to support a future career in the field.
What skills will help you succeed as a forensic scientist?
To succeed as a forensic scientist, you'll need: - Problem-solving skills: You'll need a logical and methodical approach to overcoming challenges - Teamwork skills: You'll work both independently and as part of a team, so the ability to collaborate is essential - Conscientiousness: You'll need to carry out analytical work with attention to detail - Communication skills: Written and oral communication skills are essential for conveying a clear message - The ability to meet deadlines: You'll have to work to deadlines, so time-management and organisational skills are important
