Overview

The Young Nurse Summer Experience gives students aged 15-18 a 360-degree, fully immersive experience of working as a nurse in London.

Over the course of 15 days, students aged 15-18 will have some of the most prestigious experiences of nursing that one can imagine: conducting a vital signs examination on a real-life patient; shadowing doctors and nurses practising medical tasks in a London teaching hospital; delving into the complex needs of psychiatric patients and coaching on entering one of the most life-rewarding careers in the world.
Also available on the Summer Experience are, visits to a pioneering digital health company and London nursing colleges.

    • Accommodation, meals, guardianship and airport pick-up are available if required and can be added at checkout. London accommodation is provided at University of London’s halls of residence. Evening social activities will also be provided for students booking with accommodation. 

    Fees, Eligibility and Options

    This programme is for students aged 15-18. No prior knowledge or experience is required; our professionals will give you all the training you need. There is no application process, and you can secure your place simply by clicking “Register Now”. We operate on a first-come first-served basis so encourage you to register as soon as possible.

    The experience will begin on 22nd July 2022. You can choose either the 15-Day Experience, 10-Day Experience or 5-Day Experience.

    The Live Online Summer Experience will begin on 12th August 2022. You can choose either 10-Day or 5-Day Summer Experience.

    - The academic seminar: discuss the contents of the morning lecture in a seminar group led by an academic, reflect on the topics raised with likeminded individuals
    - Problem-based learning: work effectively as part of a team to research and plan for a knock-out group presentation to solve the medical case
    - The group presentation: present your team’s finding to your peers and academics from the Department of Nursing
    - The feedback: receive feedback on your presentation and reflect on your team’s performance

    - You become the hiring manager: step into the shoes of a senior hiring manager working at the NHS as you screen a set of graduate applications and select which candidates you would like to interview

    The graduate recruiter was impressed by your knockout CV and you have now been invited to interview for the role.

    - Interview workshop: receive bespoke public speaking training on how best to articulate yourself during high-pressure, professional situations such as interviews and presentations

    - Graduate nursing assessments: discover the different types of activities you will be faced with during an assessment centre and the core healthcare competencies that recruiters are looking for
    - Work independently to undertake a written exercise, and as part of a group of candidates to tackle a challenging discussion, all whilst competing for the same role
    - Impress the hiring manager with your calm and organised approach to work and receive live feedback on your suitability for the role

    AfternoonThe Group Exercise: A Multidisciplinary Team

    - Real-life case study: Investigate an uptick in unusual animal deaths, dental decay, blackened teeth, tumours, birth defects, and other unusual symptoms in a rural population
    - Examine the public health crisis from the perspective of a nurse and propose solutions
    - Meet your multidisciplinary team, establish members’ individual strengths and areas of expertise, and work together to identify the cause of disease
    - Teamwork: master the art of managing discussions as you approach the problem from different angles, collate evidence, and put together a holistic action plan
    - Key skills: manage your time effectively, create a new diagnostic criterion, and propose curative and palliative treatment plans

You will also be able to access any of InvestIN’s Live Online weekend and evening programmes through AmbitionX at no extra cost.

    COVID-19 Group

    We do not anticipate any Covid-related issues preventing us from delivering the in-person programme. Any government guidance on Covid-related safeguarding (such as the wearing of masks and social distancing) will of course be adhered to. We have managed to successfully deliver in-person programmes during the Covid-19 pandemic (including during the summers of 2020 and 2021), with excellent feedback. We are therefore highly experienced in giving students a fantastic experience even with social distancing rules in place.

    In the unlikely event that the in-person programme is cancelled because of Covid-19 then students will have two options: i) move to the next in-person date; ii) move to the ‘Live Online’ version of the programme you selected and be refunded the difference in price. (If you pay via credit because you postponed a previous booking then the credit note will be reissued to you in full).
