The Young Doctor Summer Weekend
The Young Doctor Summer Weekend
London • Ages 15-18

Dates: 27th to 28th July 2019
Location: University College London (UCL)
PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The Young Doctor Summer Weekend gives students a 360-degree experience of practising medicine. Over two days a group of highly-accomplished doctors will simulate a doctor’s surgery, coaching you in how to perform key medical tasks; as well as how to gain entry into a top medical school.

There are three clear outcomes for the programme

  • You will undertake the ultimate medical work experience. The entire second day of the programme will be a series of live simulations in which you will carry out fundamental medical tasks.
  • You will be coached in how to maximise your chances of gaining admission into a top UK medical school– through both detailed sessions on the selection process, writing perfect personal statements, and excelling in the UKCAT and BMAT tests; AND through a dedicated mock interview session in which you will receive personal feedback.
  • You will meet and network with established doctors from a variety of medical disciplines, and be given the chance to ask them questions on a personal basis. These professionals can become vital mentors for you throughout your career.

Key tasks you will undertake include:

  • Patient diagnosis
  • Carrying out CPR
  • Stitching up a wound (suturing)
  • Taking a patient’s medical history

Boost Your Applications

The Young Doctor Summer Weekend, therefore, represents a fantastic opportunity for you to both experience life as a doctor and prepare for the medical school admission process. Further, you can reference your attendance on the programme in your UCAS personal statement and medical school interview as an example of your commitment to becoming a doctor.

The InvestIN Commitment

You will also be invited to complete an optional online assessment of what you learned on the weekend. You will be given a score and this can be a fantastic ‘gold star’ to include on your UCAS personal statement and future CV.

After the weekend programme, InvestIN continues to act as a platform for you to build a successful career upon. Our alumni have unlimited lifetime access to our depth of expertise; students can contact us with further questions at any time, and we make sure you are promptly given the advice you need. Your attendance on the weekend is therefore just the beginning of our long-term commitment to coaching you towards achieving your career ambitions.

Do I need to apply and be accepted in order to attend a programme?
There is no application in order to attend our programmes, as we feel that passion, ambition and a willingness to commit toward your future is enough. Our programmes, however, are extremely popular and are often full months in advance. We offer our places on a first-come first-served basis and places are highly limited.
Do I need to have prior knowledge?
No prior knowledge is required to attend our programmes, as we introduce each topic from a basic level of understanding.
What is the dress code for the programme/internship?
We ask that students wear professional clothing on our programmes as you will be meeting industry executives. Essentially, avoid wearing jeans, trainers or tracksuits. Suits, chinos and other smart casual wear are all acceptable.

How do I get to the accommodation?

The nearest tube stations are Great Portland Street (Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines), Warren Street (Victoria Line), and Goodge Street (Northern Line). The accommodation is also walking distance from Euston and St Pancras stations. From Heathrow Airport you can take the Heathrow Express to Paddington (20 minutes), and then the Circle Line from Paddington to Great Portland Street (10 minutes). A map can be found here.

Will I have to share my room/facilities?

The rooms are single, but bathrooms are shared.

How safe is the accommodation?

UCL accommodation has 24-hour security on-site. In addition, InvestIN staff (our chaperones) will be staying at the halls of residence, and there will be a 24-hour contact number (available from the time students check-in until the end of the programme) should you need any assistance.

Can you tell me more about the chaperones?

Our chaperones are security-vetted (enhanced DBS check), adult members of staff who have experience of supervising children. They will carry out registration twice per day and escort the students to and from the programme. A chaperone will be available 24 hours per day should students need any assistance.

Are any meals included?

Meals are included if the accommodation option is selected and booked. Should you have any dietary requirements we shall do our best to accommodate them subject to the ability of UCL to do so. We shall ask you about any dietary requirements in a separate form after you have booked.

Do I need a visa?

Nationals of certain countries require visas to visit the UK. You can check https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa

Do I need to provide any details in advance of my arrival?

Once you have registered we shall send you a form to complete which asks for basic information such as your name, address, contact, and passport details. You must bring your passport with you for check-in.

What happens in the event of an accident or emergency?

A chaperone will be available 24 hours per day (from the time students check-in until the end of the programme) should students need any assistance.

House rules?

Registration takes place twice per day at the halls of residence:
09:30
22:00

Students must be present for each registration.

We ask that students are back on accommodation premises by 21:30 and do not permit students to leave the halls of residence after that time.

Our programmes are an opportunity for students to experience professional life. As such, we expect our students to behave like young adults. Any student who displays any behaviour that would, in our reasonable opinion, be undesirable or whose behaviour we, or UCL, consider to be inappropriate, may be asked to leave the programme and the halls of residence immediately. Inappropriate behaviour includes the consumption of alcohol, rude behaviour towards others, and failure to turn up to registration

Can parents visit or stay?

Parents can visit students but are not permitted to enter into the lecture hall itself as we try to create a professional environment. Parents are not allowed to stay overnight as UCL does not permit guests to stay in their halls of residence.

Can I stay one night instead of two?

Only two nights’ accommodation is available. If you are only able to check-in on Saturday please let us know and we shall make arrangements for you.

Can I cancel my accommodation?

Accommodation is non-refundable.

Is there WiFi internet access?

There is free WiFi access in all bedrooms.

Are the rooms air-conditioned/heated?

No. There is no air-conditioning and the rooms are not heated in the summer.

Can you arrange an airport pick-up?

We do offer airport pick ups/drop-offs for an additional charge. Please email us at info@investin.org or call us on +44 (0) 203 915 1420 to discuss further.

Can I stay longer in the accommodation or check-in earlier?

We are not able to arrange accommodation outside the dates of the internship. We can recommend some local hotels if you require accommodation either before or after the dates of our programme.

What if I have other questions that are not answered above?
You can read our STUDENT FAQs or, if you are the parent of a student interested in attending, our PARENT INFO section. If you would prefer to contact us, please feel free to email us on info@investin.org or call +44 (0) 203 915 1420.
